EE MUNGU
NGUVU YETU

The National Anthem of Kenya is a prayer for peace, unity, and prosperity. It was composed by a special commission in 1963 and remains one of the few anthems globally that was specifically crafted to represent a new nation's aspirations.

The History

Commissioned by the Government of Kenya in 1963, the anthem was based on a traditional Pokomo cradle song. Five members of the National Anthem Commission (Graham Hyslop, G.W. Senoga-Zake, Thomas Kalume, Peter Kibukosya, and Washington Omondi) collaborated to create both versions.

Cultural Protocol

When the anthem is played, all citizens are expected to stand at attention in honor of the nation. It is sung at all national ceremonies, schools, and major state events.
