Verification is the final and most critical step in the electoral process. Learn how to verify your status and what to do if your name is missing.
BEYOND REGISTRATION: WHY VERIFICATION IS CRITICAL
Registering as a voter is only step one. Step two—and arguably the most important—is Voter Verification. This is the period established by the IEBC before every election where the 'Preliminary Register of Voters' is opened for public inspection. During this time, every citizen has a legal right to confirm that their name, ID number, and polling station are correctly recorded in the system. If you fail to verify and there is a technical error in the register, you will be turned away on election day, regardless of whether you have a physical voter card.
METHODS OF VERIFICATION
1. THE DIGITAL PORTAL: The IEBC provides an online portal (usually accessible via their official website) where you can input your ID number to see your full registration details.
2. THE SMS SERVICE: By sending your ID or Passport number to a designated short-code (e.g., 361), you will receive a text confirmation of your polling station and ward.
3. PHYSICAL INSPECTION: Every polling station in Kenya (usually a school or community center) is required by law to display a physical list of all voters registered at that station for a period of 30 days.
COMMON ISSUES TO CHECK FOR
- MISPELLED NAMES: Even a one-letter difference can cause issues with the KIEMS (biometric) identification system on election day.
- WRONG POLLING STATION: Sometimes, due to administrative changes, your station might have moved or been renamed.
- DECEASED VOTERS: Verification also allows citizens to identify the names of deceased relatives to ensure they are removed from the roll, preventing 'ghost voting' and electoral fraud.
HOW TO FILE A COMPLAINT OR CLAIM
If your details are missing or incorrect:
- VISIT YOUR CONSTITUENCY OFFICE: Go to the IEBC office in the constituency where you registered.
- FILL IN THE CLAIM FORM: Provide your original ID and the registration slip you received originally.
- RECEIVE A RECEIPT: Ensure the IEBC officer gives you a claim receipt. This is your legal proof that you attempted to fix the error in case you need to escalate the issue later.
Verification is the heartbeat of a transparent election. Encouraging your family and community to verify their details is the single most effective way to prevent last-minute disenfranchisement.
