Voter registration is a continuous process. Learn about the different types of centers and how to find the most convenient one for you.
A CONTINUOUS DEMOCRATIC JOURNEY A common misconception is that voter registration only happens during 'Mass Voter Registration' (MVR) drives. In reality, voter registration in Kenya is a continuous process. You can register at any official IEBC office on any working day of the year. While the MVR drives are high-energy events that bring biometrics to the markets and schools, the permanent offices are the backbone of our electoral system. THE THREE LEVELS OF REGISTRATION CENTERS 1. THE CONSTITUENCY OFFICE: Each of Kenya's 290 constituencies has a permanent office. This is the primary hub for registration and transfers. If you live in Westlands, you go to the Westlands IEBC office (usually located at a government social hall or administrative center). 2. THE COUNTY OFFICE: For larger administrative issues, each of the 47 counties has a headquarters. They can assist with registration but are usually focused on managing the constituency offices below them. 3. MOBILE UNITS (DURING MVR): During specific 30-day windows announced before an election, the IEBC deploys 'BVR' (Biometric Voter Registration) kits to thousands of secondary locations—secondary schools, church halls, and market squares—to reach the most remote citizens. HOW TO FIND YOUR CENTER - THE TUKOKADI PORTAL: Use our interactive map to find the GE-coordinates of the 290 constituency offices. - THE IEBC WEBSITE: The commission publishes a full list of all official offices before every registration drive. - LOCAL ADMINISTRATION: Your local chief or ward administrator always knows where the latest registration desks are located. SPECIAL CENTERS FOR SPECIAL GROUPS - PRISONERS: Under Kenyan law, prisoners have the right to register and vote (Presidential only). The IEBC sets up temporary centers within correctional facilities. - DIASPORA: Specific centers are set up in Kenyan High Commissions and Embassies abroad. - ILL AND DISABLED CITIZENS: While you must physically register once for biometrics, the IEBC often prioritizes disabled citizens at centers to ensure they do not have to wait in long queues. WHAT YOU NEED TO CARRY - ORIGINAL NATIONAL ID: Not a copy, and not a birth certificate. - VALID KENYAN PASSPORT: This is also an acceptable document for registration within Kenya. - PROOF OF RESIDENCE: (Sometimes required if you are registering far from your ancestral home to prove your ward connection). Don't wait for the multi-million shilling TV campaigns. Register today and avoid the queues that inevitably form in the final weeks before an election.
