Why Youth Participation is the Deciding Factor for 2027

The 2027 election will not be won with old tactics; it will be decided by the 4 million first-time voters and the digital-native generation.
A DEMOGRAPHIC WAVE In Kenya, 'youth' is defined as anyone between the ages of 18 and 35. This group makes up over three-quarters of the country's population. Yet, for nearly six decades, the youth were viewed by the political establishment as a group to be 'mobilized' with small handouts rather than a group to be 'heard' as a policy-making force. That era ended in 2024. The next General Election will be the first where the digital-native generation is the majority on the voter roll. MOVING FROM THE STREETS TO THE POLLS The 2024 mass protests against fiscal policies showed that young Kenyans are capable of organizing with incredible precision without a central kingpin. The challenge for 2027 is to sustain that organizational energy. While protests show a need for change, only the ballot box can implement it. The 'ballot is the ultimate protest'. STRATEGIC WAYS TO ENGAGE 1. UNDERSTANDING THE WARD LEVEL: Most young people focus on the Presidency, but the County Assembly (MCA) is where your local health clinics and street lights are managed. Influencing who sits in your County Assembly has the most immediate impact on your daily life. 2. RUNNING FOR OFFICE: The Constitution of 2010 lowered the barriers for young people to run for office. We need more 25-year-old MCAs and 30-year-old MPs who understand the digital economy and the realities of modern employment. 3. PUBLIC PARTICIPATION: Article 196 of the Constitution requires every County Assembly to facilitate public participation in its legislative processes. Young people must attend these forums to ensure that youth-focused projects like vocational training and tech hubs are actually funded.
